Background and Purpose: Home exercise programs (HEPs) improve quality of life (QoL), physical function, and fatigue in individuals recovering from cancer; however, they often lack supervision and individualization. Use of a weekly telephone call by a physical therapist (PT) may provide substantial guidance to improve outcomes and adherence. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of weekly calls in addition to an individualized HEP on physical function, QoL, fatigue, and adherence in people with cancer.

Methods: A prospective 2-armed single-cohort design implemented with survivors of cancer in early recovery. Control and intervention groups received in-home instruction of a PT-prescribed, 8-week HEP. The intervention group received weekly phone calls while the control group had no formal follow-up or program monitoring. Outcome measures assessed pre-/postintervention: 6-minute walk test (6MWT), Fullerton Advanced Balance Scale, European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer QoL Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30), and Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Fatigue Scale (FACIT). Nonparametric statistics were used to analyze changes within and between groups.

Results: Fifteen participants (n = 7 intervention and n = 8 control) completed the study. The intervention group improved significantly in all outcomes except the 6MWT (P < .05). The control group did not demonstrate any significant improvements. Between groups, there was a significant difference at program completion in the FACIT (P = .007) and EORTC QLQ-C30 physical function subscale (P = .042).

Limitations: A small, heterogeneous sample.

Conclusions: An individualized HEP with weekly calls may be a safe and effective way to improve outcomes of physical function, QoL, and fatigue in individuals with cancer during early recovery.

Background
Disabilities may play a different role in determining people’s physical activity (PA) and physical inactivity (PI) levels when they go through multiple lifetime transitions (e.g., graduation, marriage) between adolescence and young adulthood. This study investigates how disability severity is associated with changes in PA and PI engagement levels, focusing on adolescence and young adulthood, when the patterns of PA and PI are usually formed.

Methods
The study employed data from Waves 1 (adolescence) and 4 (young adulthood) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, which covers a total of 15,701 subjects. We first categorized subjects into 4 disability groups: no, minimal, mild, or moderate/severe disability and/or limitation. We then calculated the differences in PA and PI engagement levels between Waves 1 and 4 at the individual level to measure how much the PA and PI levels of individuals changed between adolescence and young adulthood. Finally, we used two separate multinomial logistic regression models for PA and PI to investigate the relationships between disability severity and the changes in PA and PI engagement levels between the two periods after controlling for multiple demographic (age, race, sex) and socioeconomic (household income level, education level) variables.

Results
We showed that individuals with minimal disabilities were more likely to decrease their PA levels during transitions from adolescence to young adulthood than those without disabilities.

Our findings also revealed that individuals with moderate to severe disabilities tended to have higher PI levels than individuals without disabilities when they were young adults. Furthermore, we found that people above the poverty level were more likely to increase their PA levels to a certain degree compared to people in the group below or near the poverty level.

Conclusions
Our study partially indicates that individuals with disabilities are more vulnerable to unhealthy lifestyles due to a lack of PA engagement and increased PI time compared to people without disabilities. We recommend that health agencies at the state and federal levels allocate more resources for individuals with disabilities to mitigate health disparities between those with and without disabilities.

Purpose The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of physical activity (PA) interventions on return to work (RTW) in cancer survivors, compared to usual care, and to determine the dose of PA needed to improve this outcome. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Six electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CENTRAL, PsycINFO, and Scopus were searched to identify studies, and completed by a search of grey literature and health organization websites. Two authors performed screening, selection, and data extraction independently. Study and intervention characteristics were extracted and summarized. Pooled risk ratio (RR) was estimated using a weight random-effects model with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results A total of 2655 records were identified, of which 8 intervention studies were included. The sample size of the included studies varied between 41 and 240, giving a total of 1087 participants aged between 18 and 75 years. Compared with usual care, PA interventions had a significant positive effect on RTW among cancer survivors with a pooled RR of 1.29 (95% CI 1.17, 1.42). We found that PA interventions (aerobic and resistance exercises) with an exercise dose between 7.6 METs.h/week and 15 METs.h/week, consisting in 50–60 min per session of moderate to vigorous physical exercise, twice a week seems relevant in improving RTW. Conclusions Our results showed, with moderate quality evidence that PA interventions are more effective than usual care in increasing the rate of RTW in cancer survivors.

Background: Cognitive orientation to daily occupational performance (CO-OP) is a client-centered treatment approach that was developed in the 1990s by occupational therapists. Purpose: Exploring current evidence about the effectiveness of CO-OP on children with cerebral palsy (CP). Method: Major electronic databases were searched. A narrative synthesis of current literature and meta-analyses on randomized control trials (RCTs) were conducted on changes in occupational performance. Findings: Seven studies with 103 participants were included. Four studies were RCTs with moderate levels of evidence, and three studies had single-subject designs. Although beneficial effects of CO-OP on goal achievement and transferring learned skills were reported, meta-analyses showed that CO-OP had no significant effect on the performance (WMD = 1.52, 95% CI = −1.58 to 4.63, P = .33) and satisfaction domains (WMD = 1.71, 95% CI = −1.14 to 4.57, P = .24) of Canadian Occupational Performance Measure scores compared to alternative interventions. Implications: CO-OP improves occupational performance but not more than alternative interventions. Results are inconclusive due to small sample sizes and heterogeneity of alternative interventions and participants. Therefore, research with a larger number of participants with sound RCT methods is needed.

Background.
Physical activity (PA) promotes children’s health. While sensory processing is integral to motor output, research regarding PA in children with sensory processing challenges is sparse.

Purpose.
This study aimed to examine the PA pattern and its association with daily life participation of children with sensory processing challenges.

Method.
Forty-four children ages 5 to 7 years were divided into the study group (children with sensory processing challenges; n = 22; 16 males) and an age-matched typically developing control group (n = 22; nine males). Parents completed the Short Sensory Profile, a demographic questionnaire, Participation in Childhood Occupations Questionnaire, and Participation in Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire–Modified. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlational analysis.

Findings.
Structured PA was reported in 45% and 77% of the study and control groups, respectively (p = .030). In the study group, the level of participation in PA was found to be significantly correlated with play and leisure activities.

Implications.
Promoting structured and group PA opportunities may be important for children with sensory processing challenges.
